Replacement of the knee is possible with different prosthesis. Knee osteoarthritis can be more or less advanced and the patients – each is different - can have a knee replacement adapted to their case. In general these prosthesis are used to replace the damaged cartilage: they are made up of two separate components. On the tibial side is polyethylene (a very hard kind of plastic); on the femoral side, a metallic piece. The femur slides against the tibia. Ineach case the surgeon is able to choose "the best" prosthesis for each patient.
