Gonarthritis: the x-ray on the left shows a healthy knee: the bone ("os" - visible in white on x-rays) of the femur and the tibia is separated by cartilage ("ca" - not visible on x-ray); also on the lateral and medial side. The x-ray on the right-hand side shows a medial osteoarthritis of the knee (gonarthrosis): the arrow indicates the obvious absence of cartilage (pinching between the femur and the tibia). This is an gonarthrosis -osteoarthritis of the knee- (wearing down of two articular surfaces), and it causes pain because the bone of the femur "rubs" against that of the tibia.
