The x-ray on the left shows a healthy knee: the bone ("os" -
visible in white on x-rays) of the femur and the tibia is separated by
cartilage,; ("ca" - not visible on x-ray);also on the lateral
and medial side. The x-ray on the right-hand side shows a medial
osteoarthritis of the knee: the arrow indicates the obvious absence of
cartilage (pinching between the femur and the tibia). This is an
osteoarthritis of the knee (wearing down of two articular surfaces), and
it causes pain because the bone of the femur "rubs" against that of the
tibia.
