Normal x-ray

arthritis of the knee: x-rays

Knee osteoarthritis

The x-ray on the left shows a healthy knee: the bone ("os" - visible in white on x-rays) of the femur and the tibia is separated by cartilage,; ("ca" - not visible on x-ray);also on the lateral and medial side. The x-ray on the right-hand side shows a medial osteoarthritis of the knee: the arrow indicates the obvious absence of cartilage  (pinching between the femur and the tibia). This is an osteoarthritis of the knee (wearing down of two articular surfaces), and it causes pain because the bone of the femur "rubs" against that of the tibia.
