Osteotomy of the knee

This image shows a patient who was operated on, for an osteotomy of the left knee (click to see the clinical result 3 months after the surgery ....). The left leg is well aligned. The arrow shows where the weight of the body is resting more on the healthy external compartment, thus relieving the weakened cartilage of the internal compartment. An osteotomy of the tibia can relieve the pain in the knee (for a period of 10 to 15 years) and it can provide the patient with a "normal" knee, even for taking part in sports activities. Osteotomy gives good results when osteoarthritis is not very advanced, when only one compartment is affected, when there is a lower linb deformity (in varus or in valgus) and if the patient is relatively young (40 – 50 years -old). |
