knee replacement

Knee replacement: different kinds of prosthesis

Unicompartmental knee replacement or partial knee replacement

Total knee repalcement

Total knee replacement for major deformity

There are  different prosthesis of the knee. Knee osteoarthritis can be more or less advanced and the patients – each is different - can have a knee replacement adapted to their case. In general these prosthesis are used to replace the damaged cartilage: they are made up of two separate components. On the tibial side is polyethylene (a very hard kind of plastic); on the femoral side, a metallic piece. The femur slides against the tibia. In each case the surgeon is able to choose "the best" prosthesis for each patient.
