Bone spurs in the elbow

The image shows an osteophyte ("bone spur") of the olecranon in the elbow. It is the "result" of the patient's body attempting to produce new bone in response to cartilage damage. The removal of this spur gives increased mobility (because the mechanical lock is removed) and it lessens the pain, because there is no longer any conflict with the posterior part of the humerus. In these cases the extension deficit is related to this blockage (mechanical origin).
